I did a lot of research before purchasing these. Videos of other similar products were helpful in making my final decision. Aluminum was important versus powder coated steel. Design was important...I learned that a gutter guard that sits up in the gutter is better than a gutter guard that sits down in the gutter (like a trough).
Another big selling point for me is that they can be easily removed. Aside from leaves in my gutters from several nearby trees, and next big gutter clogging items are dirt from dust storms and granules from shingles. So, I wanted gutter guards that I could remove every 10 years or so to clean-out the dirt/granules.
When I took them out of the box, they were fairly flat, except for the ends...which is a necessity for shipping them in boxes that are thin. When I tried to fit one in my 5" gutters, it seemed to be a tight fit and the gutter guard got a little bent up. But it was easy to bend it back into shape. I also thought I'd try to cut one down by an inch to see if it fit any better--NOPE, don't do that. It will be too loose and will fall into the gutter, and the cuts will leave lots of tiny sharp edges that will cut-up your hands.
For my installation, I learned to bend the gutter guard a little to make it concave. I did this by using both thumbs and working my way down the length of the gutter guard...quick and easy to do. Once concave, they installed like a charm.
The gutter guard may snap into the lip of the roof flashing in the back of the gutter. Sometimes it snaps in, and sometimes it doesn't. The main thing that keeps them upright is the concave shape, and the fact that they rest on the gutter hangers/nails, which seem to be spaced every 3 feet or so.
INSTALLATION TIP: If the end of one gutter guard extends about 2-3 inches over the gutter nail, then when you install the next gutter guard, make sure to place it on TOP of the prior guard guard, because the prior gutter guard is being held-up by that nail. If you do that, then it guarantees that the next gutter guard will not sag into the gutter. LIKEWISE, if one gutter guard extends 2 feet over the gutter nail, then when you install the next gutter guard, make sure to place it UNDER the prior gutter guard...to help prop it up.
It was easy to overlap them. They look good. They work well. I've had a few good rain storms since installing them, and the water flows through the gutter guard and into the gutter...not over the gutter guard and onto the ground.
I purchased these in late fall, and installed them in spring. I'm really looking forward to not cleaning my gutters this fall...!
E-Z gutter guard is much easier to work with, no sharp edges and no screws required. It is much more expensive.
Hydro-Shield had sharp edges and required screws, but was less expensive. Also, if bent too much, it breaks very easily.
If either of these is damaged by hail, I think I will replace them with stainless steel leaf guards.
