I used it a couple times to split the fire wood up as well just to see how it performs (I actually have a gas log splitter but was curious) and I must say this wedge is truly an aggressive item that does not take no for an answer it splits it all!
I really like the Estwing better than the diamond wedge--the diamonds have to be quite far into the wood before you hit it with anything like an 8# maul, or they just pop out. Plus, all the paint on that Chinese diamond wedge came off right away onto my wood. All the paint is still on my old blue Estwing except the head.
I always start with a maul; if that doesn't punch into the wood so I can use a small hammer on it, I go to the Estwing. The Estwing has the maul cut to already start in, so it rarely pops out.
The Estwing is definitely a big step up from a standard wedge.
Put your money on the Estwing instead of those diamond wedges.
Now I use a chain saw, a two-pound hammer, and this single wedge. Swinging the hammer with one hand and holding the log still with the other, I can split firewood as quickly as I could 50 years ago.
This wedge is made of properly hardened American steel that doesn't bend, deform, or "frizzle" on top - and holds its edge. Its shape is perfect for the task, and the "wings" allow you to keep driving it even when it is below flush with the surface.
It's a simple tool - simply perfect.

I found the best technique is to put two saw cuts, an inch or so deep, at right-angles, to make a cross on the flat top of the stump. This is to make a 'start' for the splitting wedge. Drive the wedge down through the centre of the stump. You may reach a point where it will go no further, or is below the point where you can continue hammering it. At this point it will also not want to come back out of the stump - ie, is wedged in. At this point a decent crow-bar comes in handy. Start again on one of the other cross cuts, then repeat. You'll end up with a stump in four sections. Of course, you'll still need to get under it to cut through the roots which will be holding it into the ground, but this is a lot easier when the main stump is in four pieces.
This is a very useful bit of kit. Extremely robust, it literally took a big hammering and came through without any ill effects. It is made from forged steel - which means it won't shatter or crack.
